thinking caps

Right, everyone, pay attention. Last month I wrote a not so happy blog post about the likelihood of me going blind. So, I'm going to do some kind of fund-raiser to raise money for EEC International, who fund the research centres, which are looking for a cure for this blindness problem using stem cell research and all that science-y jazz. They do a lot of work for the rare freaks, like me.

I want you to get your thinking caps on. What should I do? Should I bake a bazillion cakes? Should I swim to the moon? You can suggest I be creative for charity, you can suggest that I be absolutely outrageous [no jumping out of planes etc, though, please, thank you!]. I am contemplating running the marathon wearing nothing but sellotape, but not sure how practical that is... hmmm.

Answers on a postcard [or in the comments section below], please! Thanks xx

  1. How about an anthology - get people to submit and then publish it via Lulu or an ebook via Amazon and then the profits can go towards EEC Italia?

  2. Knit blindfolds. Thousands of them.

  3. I have no idea what to suggest. Anthology sounds like a good idea. Specially if you have a theme that's relevant. Or maybe a memoir that could support others in the future who will have the same news you did. (As well as educating people who had never heard of the condition until they read your blog. Like me.)

  4. I'm not so sure about your sellotape idea. You will get very warm and the sweat could make the sellotape fall off = bad idea.
I was going to suggest running the marathon blindfolded but that has been done already.
Maybe swim across Loch Ness (and hopefully not be mistaken for Nessie). The whole way from Inverness to Fort Augustus is a bit far, but maybe from Inverness to Urquhart Castle. I'm sure that has been done before too though.
The anthology idea sounds great. You just need a good theme to make it interesting.

  5. marathon writing? Donations by the hundred-word?

  6. I think anninyn might be on to something: how about blindfolds knitted/decorated by celebrities and put up for auction, with the proceeds benefiting EEC Italia? Perhaps some of the authors you've interviewed, or who have supported your blog would be willing to participate?

  7. I like the idea of an anthology, or some sort of volunteer submission on blindness...
And the knitting sounds super-cool, too...

  8. Will Self once did an observational "writing installation" in a gallery in London, where he sat at an overhead projector writing what he saw as the patrons walked by. You could nick that idea and somehow attach a money-making scheme thereto.

  9. More support for the anthology idea; time-consuming to produce initially, but potential for ongoing profits. A theme sounds good, too, for example 'vision' in its widest sense. Good luck, whatever you decide.

  10. Rather than the marathon how about a writers race. Make a big noise here, there and on twitter and get a load of others to join in and thereby multiply the fundraising effect. Make it from the Tate Modern to Westminster Bridge and back along the South Bank or somewhere similar. Make it a 3legged race or something to give it a media quirk and again up the scale of the fundraising potential.

  11. The anthology idea would probably make the most money long term, but I do love Clive's idea of a writer's three legged race :-)
